What is your favorite book and/or author, and what draws you to them?

How could anyone ever choose just one book? Haha. I remember my parents reading me The Chronicles of Narnia before I could read them myself (and I learned to read really young), and I still love them today. My favorite living author, though, is Robin McKinley. Anything she writes is an auto-buy for me. I still have the battered copy of Beauty that my fifth-grade teacher gave me, and though I have since come to love other McKinley books even more, I can pinpoint Beauty as the book that most closely inspires my writing.

 

Is this your first book? If not, what was the first book you ever finished writing?

I’ve been writing stories since Kindergarten (they’ve pretty much all had magic and princesses in them), but the first novel I finished was a sprawling, four-kingdom, multiple POV epic about the rise, fall and redemption of the Evil Queen. I’m so proud of it, but I can see why it wouldn’t sell, and I’m OK with that. I’ve since pared down the story and completely reworked it into the novel I’m querying now (still the redemption of the Evil Queen, but a little more reasonable in scope, and with, you know, actual structure).

 

What’s the working title of your NaNoWriMo17 project?

The Magic of Movement and Light

 

Give us an elevator pitch of your project.

Lara wants nothing more than to take her place in the ballroom that turns dancing into magic, but she hasn’t found a Partner yet. When she encounters a janitor in the Dance Hall, she thinks he’s the one she’s been waiting for… but he hates the ballroom and never learned to dance.

 

Share your favorite line/short paragraph from your book so far.

(This excerpt is from the first scene I wrote. It exemplifies peak Nano: it’s fun beautiful and it needed some editing before I could share it even in this state.)
I knelt on the cold marble floor and closed my eyes, but instead of falling into darkness, I was transported back to the brilliant Dance. I could see it all in my mind’s eye: the candles burning everywhere, in candelabras and chandeliers, suffusing the room with golden light; the musicians in the balcony filling the room with sweet melodies; the exquisite Dancers, arrayed in a pattern on the floor, swirling in time to the music, as if it carried them away; the magic pouring off them, spilling over them in crystal rivers to the Shapers on the perimeter, who sculpted it into the needs of our people.

What inspired you to join the Mighty Pens?

It was the perfect win-win-win! I had a story idea, but I need accountability, camaraderie, and a deadline if I’m going to finish Nano (I’ve only done it once before). What better motivation than to announce publicly that I was going to do it? I also admire Malala greatly (who doesn’t?!), and feel strongly that women’s rights are critical to world peace and prosperity, so this was the perfect charity for me. Such a great cause made it easier for me to ask people to contribute. And prizes! I love prizes, too!
