What is your favorite book and/or author, and what draws you to them?

This is going to make me seem like a bit of a suck-up, but it’s the truth! I am a big fan of Sooz’s books! I actually found her website and subscribed to her newsletter first for her awesome writing advice, and it was there I discovered she was already an author. I read the Something Strange & Deadly series first. And that hooked me. Then I devoured Truthwitch & Windwitch. And I’m a fan for life! Her characters are just so unique and interesting it’s hard to want to leave them. I’m looking forward to Sightwitch, and, um, all things Aeduan. I mean Bloodwitch. He’s such a gooood character! I mean, talk about depth.

Is this your first book? If not, what was the first book you ever finished writing?

My NaNo project is not the first I’ve written. The first was seven years ago. It was middle-grade fantasy about a girl who gets sucked into the book she’s reading, literally, and finds herself in the middle of a war betweem woodland creatures. It’s called Realm of Secrets. I put it down because I just wasn’t where I needed to be in my craft to edit it without totally destroying it. But it was a fun one and I can’t wait to get back to it with a new skill set and a fresh pair of eyes.

 

What’s the working title of your NaNoWriMo17 project?

The Rebirth of Stars

 

Give us an elevator pitch of your project.

My attempt at an elevator pitch: About a girl who suffers a traumatic event causing her to split into two forms of herself. One that has the power to destroy, one with the power to heal. In the end, only one of them can survive.

 

Share your favorite line/short paragraph from your book so far.

I pulled the darkness overhead like a cloak, a long ruinous train that dragged along the ground behind me. Every step I took was like planting a seed of death. Each one sprouting a poison that would wipe out anything that took its lifeblood from the ground. Grass turned to dust. Trees turned black from the inside out until they cracked and crumbled to ash. This town, this dreadful place, had been a wasteland. It was time that it resembled one. I watched the light warrior land in front of the brick building. What did he think he could possibly do? Take her away? He was wrong. She could never escape me. I knew her better than anyone else. The scent of her. The despair in her heart, the chaos in her mind.

 

How did you hear about the Mighty Pens?

I heard about The Mighty Pens from Susan Dennard, of course!

 

What inspired you to join the Mighty Pens?

I was already excited to participate in NaNoWriMo this year, but when I saw there was an opportunity to both challenge myself AND raise money for a great cause I had to be part of it. And I’m so glad that I am! I’m hoping to hit some more milestones soon and increase my donations/sponsorship before November 30th!
