What is your favorite book and/or author, and what draws you to them?

How does anyone pick just one?! The first who ever really caught my attention was JK Rowling because she created a magical place I wanted to live in just using the alphabet, ink, and paper. I’m still drawn to her simple style that manages both to push the story along and also to envelop readers in the world that she created.

 

Is this your first book? If not, what was the first book you ever finished writing?

I finished my first manuscript last NaNo (and I hated it!). It was about a young maiden who disguised herself as her cousin, the princess, when an invading army comes to take her. It follows her journey to a new country, the inner turmoil of the foreign court, the interests of not one but three very different princes there, and the knowledge that if anyone figures out her secret she won’t be valuable enough to keep alive.

 

What’s the working title of your NaNoWriMo17 project?

The Case of Stolen Pride

 

Give us an elevator pitch of your project.

It’s a Nancy Drew meets Elizabeth Bennet mystery romance set in the 1920s where Eliza is a young woman trying to solve cases to restore her father’s detective agency to its former glory while hiding his unstable mental health. While doing this, she is forced to team up with rich and arrogant Will when both of their sisters are kidnapped. Eliza is spunky and crafty, but is desperately trying to find a way to fit into the changing role that women have at the time, and dealing with tons of people who aren’t exactly glad about it.

 

Share your favorite line/short paragraph from your book so far.

“Why is she in here?” he repeated. “I don’t want her in hear listening to this.”

Beneath the desk, Eliza clenched her fists. This wasn’t the first time that her presence had been questioned in this office, but it always made her mad. 

“Well,” Mr. Benoit said, “she is my secretary, so she transcribes my meetings in order for all of the details to be organized and easily ready when I start your case.”

Trying not to let the smugness show on her face at her father’s words, she placed her hands back on the typewriter. 

HUSBAND IS A HUGE JERK, she typed.

“I don’t like it,” the man replied.

AND LOOKS LIKE AN OVERGROWN GARDEN GNOME, she added with a small smile. 

“What is she typing already?” 

“I assure you, she follows the same confidentiality rules that I do,” Mr. Benoit said. 

Eliza just looked at the man and smiled sweetly.
