Another New Silver Pen: Amy Ripley!!

What is your favorite book and/or author, and what draws you to them?

How dare you guys ask this of a writer! :O Okay, well, one of my favorite series is The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. I even have the lamp post tattooed on my arm, and wrote an award-winning TV script about C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien’s friendship, called “The Inklings.” #nerdalert 🙄  More recently, I have become a huge fan of N.K. Jemisin and want to read ALL THE WORDS. And Neil Gaiman will always have my heart.

 

Is this your first book? If not, what was the first book you ever finished writing? Tell us a little about it.

This is the first book I ever tried to write (I think it was back in 2014, yikes!), but I wasn’t ready. I put it away and started working on something else, a book I finished earlier this year. It’s called Second Kin. It’s a YA historical fantasy about sisters and fae and magical secrets, set in a small Elizabethan colony next to a dangerous forest. Currently querying!

 

What’s the working title of your NaNoWriMo17 project?

Oceanside

 

Give us an elevator pitch of your project.

Oceanside is told through dual-POV, and follows two teenage girls, one in a Californian seaside town in the 1980s and one in present day Los Angeles, as they grapple with trauma and loss. They ultimately find their way to each another and hopefully, toward healing and growth. There may or may not be a fantastical twist…
I started this draft a few months ago, so for NaNo I am working to add about 25k-30k to my progress!

 

Share your favorite line/short paragraph from your book so far.

Therese came into this world naked and crying and 16 years old, washed up on Sophia’s doorstep in a summer storm.

 

How did you hear about the Mighty Pens?

What inspired you to join the Mighty Pens?

The fundraising aspect is what first caught my eye. I have been an admirer of Malala and her work for a long time.
And, selfishly, I knew signing up would help motivate me. I am a very private writer and, like many others, suffer from some serious imposter syndrome! Most people in my life probably didn’t even know I have been working on novels for the past few years. Now everyone knows because I am begging them to donate! 😀 And being so public about this goal helps me stick with it every day. So far, so good!

    Yes, definitely keep doing what you’re doing. I admire your courage, and willingness to share your work even though it puts you in a vulnerable place. Also your inspiration for joining the Mighty Pens, what a great cause! I have had the privilege to read a lot of your work and I am excited for Oceanside!
