What is your favorite book and/or author, and what draws you to them?

Recently, Emily B. Martin. Her first two books of ‘Creatures of Light’ have two different female narrators and both are such well-rounded, inspiring characters. Their distinct voices shine through and portray the story’s world in such different ways, but maintain the intensely detailed worldbuilding and play-by-play actions scenes. Her writing is so immersive.

 

Is this your first book? If not, what was the first book you ever finished writing? Tell us a little about it.

My first finished manuscript was ‘Phoenix Fire’, a fantasy set in a steampunk-esque world with dragon tamers, mad scientists, and gang wars. Hoping to really polish it after Nano.

 

What’s the working title of your NaNoWriMo17 project?

The Priestess & The Crow.

 

Give us an elevator pitch of your project.

Yuuki is struggling with her identity as a bisexual Japanese-American who returned to Japan after ten years to attend college. While trying to impress her classmate crush, Akiko, Yuuki accidentally breaks off a branch of a tree on Akiko’s family’s shrine grounds during the fire festival. When crows begin following her every move, an androgynous tengu, a crow-demon, demands retribution and takes her–literally–under their wing. While repaying her debt, she spends more time in the spirit world than in the human realm. She gains mystical abilities but also monstrous qualities. Torn between the priestess and the demon who garner her affections, she is also tempted to abandon her own humanity for the acceptance she’s found among the monsters.

 

Share your favorite line/short paragraph from your book so far.

“I have to say, in my thousand years, no one has tried to punch me in a first encounter.” The disembodied voice came from a shadow in the corner created by my bookshelf. More than a single voice, it was as if a swarm of insects was buzzing in unison to form syllables.

What inspired you to join the Mighty Pens?

With all of the depressing backsteps American politics have been taking recently with education and women’s rights, it was exciting to use writing to benefit a campaign supporting both.
