Excerpt

Gathering her courage she peered closely at the young woman, particularly at her eyes. They did seem to have a measure of the older trader’s sparkle. A sort of inner light, like a candle left to burn behind a sheet of ice – glimmering and mesmerizing.

“What are you?” she inquired, quietly but fiercely.

The woman’s face flushed and she ducked her head quickly, “We thought you would know of us, my lady. Oh, this does explain so much. Micah thought..” she trailed off, her voice softening. “But that’s not what you asked at all. We are demon-kin, my lady.” She lifted her eyes to Pavni, the glimmer within briefly blazing and intense, “Surely you must know of us?”

“I..” Pavni began, “I have read the tales, but.. No. No. That cannot be. Demon-kin are a myth! A tale my kind told others to make us more imposing. It is not..” Pavni broke off, her knees shook and threatened to give way entirely.
