Undergraduate school. Medical School. Residency. Fellowship. Marriage. Children.
In that order, of course.
That’s been the plan since I was 13 and I showed interest in medicine—after my dreams of music were shattered
As if in answer, the all-too familiar spot on my back twinges with phantom pain. It’s only a small prick, but it’s a constant reminder of what happened. Of why I chose this path.
Every so often, though, doubt creeps in. I feel its pressure wrap around my chest and force my breath to catch. Small spots dance in my vision as I shake them away as I breathe in and out. Inhale. Release.
This is what I want, I tell myself.
This is what I want to do.
But that dream now feels so tangled in a mix of my parent’s expectations and hopes—hopes and dreams my mother brought with her as she risked everything to move to a foreign country with her American husband.
To chase that quintessential American Dream.
