4 Reasons to Join NaNoWriMo and the Mighty Pens
As if you need a reason. Jk. Maybe you do. Maybe you’re new around here and don’t know about alllll of the amazing perks that joining NaNoWriMo and the Might Pens have. Trust us, they’re really cool perks. If you’re nervous about joining, we completely understand, but we hope you’ll decide to join in on the fun! If you’re still not sure, here are our top four reasons to get on board.
1. Write Your Heart Out
We have to mention writing as the first and foremost reason to join NaNoWriMo and the Mighty Pens this year. 50,000 words is a lot, we know. And it can seem daunting, especially if you haven’t participated before. But we’re here to tell you that while 50k is the goal, it is 100% a-okay to not hit that many words. We want you to have the motivation to sit down and tell the story you’ve always wanted to tell, or to experiment with a fun new idea, or just simply put words on the page. NaNo can help you do that and the Mighty Pens are behind you the whole way. We want you to succeed almost as much as you do.
2. Expand Your Writing Community
Writers are nothing without their community. No matter where you are in your process or in your career, it is so important to have people around you to champion you, to complain to, and to brainstorm with. Finding your people can be really hard, though. With NaNo and the Mighty Pens, though, you have a never before explored community of writers just waiting to meet you. You may not find your next critique partner, but you will still find people to chat with and laugh with and cry about word counts with. And who knows, maybe you will find your next CP. Join in on the NaNo community using their hashtags on social media and the NaNo forum. We also highly recommend joining your home region to find other NaNo writers who might live just down the street from you! You can find the Mighty Pens on social media and on Discord to get in on the action.
3. Support Great Causes
Fundraising efforts by both the NaNoWriMo organization and the Mighty Pens go toward great causes! When you donate to NaNo, not only does your donation go toward keeping NaNo up and running, but it also helps support students, teachers, and communities around the world.
This year, by participating in the Might Pens and helping fundraise, you are raising money for Every Mother Counts, a nonprofit that helps provide medical assistance to expectant mothers all over the world. This is a special cause this year, since our own Susan Dennard faced birth complications just this year. Without her team of doctors, she probably wouldn’t be here today. Plenty of other mothers aren’t so lucky. Maternal death is still a huge issue, even in the United States. Plus, that risk is higher for women of color. It’s EMC’s mission to make childbirth safe for every mother everywhere.
4. Earn Cool Prizes
Okay, so, the prizes aren’t the best part about NaNoWriMo or the Mighty Pens, but we’d be lying if we didn’t mention how excited we are for them this year. If you pull off a win for NaNo, not only do you get awesome bragging rights, but you win a prize pack that includes amazing coupons to things like Scrivener, Dabble, Autocrit, IngramSpark, and so much more!
We have to say, though, that the Mighty Pens fundraising prizes are pretty sweet this year. Our goal is to not only encourage you to write your heart out, find your community, and support our charity, but also to help you succeed on your writing journey! This year, Mighty Pens fundraising prizes include signed books and art prints AND critiques for query letters, chapters of your manuscript, and more! Can you say WOW?! Reaching your word count goals also gets you some fun virtual prizes from the Mighty Pens, as well as cool things like a real-life pen and letter from Kat!
There you have it, the top four reasons to join NaNoWriMo and the Mighty Pens this year. If that doesn’t convince you, well, you’ll just have to come see what it’s all about for yourself. We hope you decide to take the leap this year and hang out with us! We love talking about writing and books and many things completely unrelated to writing and books. If you’re a returning writer, come let us know your favorite things about NaNo and the Mighty Pens, too!
