The Deadly Truth

A young guard looking for answers, a runaway princess trying to stop her father, a desperate prince trying to save his kingdom, and people with the ability to kill with a single touch.

 “Do you always run away from your problems?” Latham’s voice came, suddenly beside her.

She swung and faced him. “No, normally I run toward them. I thought I would try something else for a change.”

He walked past her toward the fire. “You will just end up running in circles if you keep doing that.” He sat down on his bedroll next to the fire. “All I’ve ever done is run away from my problems, then I just end up running right back into them.” He rubbed his bare arm. “You hate that people lie to you, but you never consider that it might not be about you. People don’t always lie to punish you or smite you.”

“Well how am I supposed to know the difference?” she asked, climbing onto her horse.

“It’s about trust,” he said into the fire.

She looked at him a moment longer, the white in his hair bright by the fire. Her father had told her they were cursed, a poison on their skin capable of killing a person. That was the reason they hadn’t told her the truth. She needed time to process what was happening, she needed to stay focused on figuring out what happened to her mother. If her mother was killed by one of these people, she would find out why.
